International Whaling Commission

Although the market for whale products has all but vanished, whaling continues to be practiced by a limited number of countries and indigenous groups, igniting enormous controversy.  Much of this controversy centers on the International Whaling Commission (IWC), which was founded in 1946 to better manage dwindling whale stocks.

In 1985 the IWC decided that uncertainty about sustainable management required a moratorium on commercial whaling, which was implemented in 1986.

In 1994, the IWC created the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary (SOWS) – click here for more information about the SOWS.

Unfortunately, however, killing of whales under the guise of "research" continues to occur in the SOWS.  ASOC is committed to eliminating all whaling within the Sanctuary, and providing true protection for all whales in the Southern Ocean.  We are accredited as an IWC observer and attend major meetings to provide a strong voice for Southern Ocean whale conservation, and to do our part to ensure that these majestic creatures are spared senseless slaughter.
