The Krill Industry Report for February has been published.

Next week, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will start the development of a mandatory Polar Code. The need for mandatory provisions to regulate polar shipping was recognised when the IMO reviewed and extended existing Guidelines for shipping in Arctic ice-covered waters to apply to the Antarctic too. The extended Guidelines for ships operating in polar waters were adopted by an IMO Assembly Resolution in December, 2009 and will apply until a Polar Code is developed and adopted. To view the NGO submission to the sub-committee meeting on ship design & equipment which will start the work on a Polar Code (22 - 26th February) click here.

ASOC is very concerned about the Marine Stewardship Council's proposals to certify part of the Antarctic krill fishery and the Ross Sea toothfish fishery. Read our November 27 press release condemning Moody Marine's proposed MSC certification of the Ross Sea toothfish fishery by clicking here. On November 4 ASOC appealed Moody Marine's decision to certify the Aker krill fishery - read our detailed appeal here. On December 11 ASOC appealed Moody Marine's decision to certify the Ross Sea toothfish fishery - read that detailed appeal here.  The Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the Ross Sea have submitted comments in support of our toothfish objection.  Click on their names to read their comments.
